Exmore and the HRSD Project

Updated: Feb 3, 2022

The Town of Exmore voted to be included in the Hampton Roads Sanitation District to help manage household sewage and waste water.

Hampton Roads Sanitation District

New Wastewater System Targeted Completion: July 2022 The Town of Exmore is working to replace its current wastewater system with a higher capacity, more modern system capable of serving all Exmore residents and businesses efficiently. This means expanding the existing system by 500 hook-ups. The current system has a limited reach of 350 homes and businesses, about one third of the community. After extensive due diligence and vetting of options, Exmore chose to partner with Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) reducing liability and workload for the Town. HRSD will be responsible for building a force main along Route 13 to transport wastewater to a treatment center in Onancock. The new system will be able to pump 190,000 gallons a day from Exmore up to Onancock, which is more than sufficient for current requirements and for future planned growth. The price tag for the project, which skyrocketed from $8 million to $17 million during the COVID pandemic, is being partially offset by a combination of loans, grants and loan forgiveness from Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ); Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD) and the US Department of Agriculture, Rural Development.
